Listing

Title

The most important things to put in the title are the brand name and style name/model number. Other words to include depend on the item. The items listed in The Thrifter's Field Guide contain clues as to additional keywords and info for the title.

Item specifics

These fields should be completed as much as possible for best results.

Pictures

The more pictures you take, the better chance your item has of being viewed. Pictures to include, if applicable:
  • All pieces and parts included in listing in one photo
  • Pic of main item all angles
  • Pic of label, tag, embossed info
  • close up of details
  • close-up of any flaws
  • Original box photo
  • close ups of interior, extra parts, etc.

Descriptions

This part is much easier than most people think. eBay is not about creative writing skills or even sales skills. Your item sells itself. The most important information to include is a factual description. Copy the title information and add any additional pertinent information such as whether it works (if applicable), any flaws or missing parts noted, if it needs cleaned, if it cannot be fully tested, measurements, etc. There is no need to put in subjective information, a lot of text, or fancy fonts and frames (those can actually hurt the visibility of your listing).
Preparing listings ahead of time

eBay provides a software program called Turbo Lister, which is supposed to help you add listings for later release. The online listing page also includes a place to indicate if you do not want the item posted immediately and select a later time. I have not used Turbo Lister in a long time due to its quirks and because it is often pretty slow. This may have changed. I do not use the post later option because it costs extra. A simple solution for preparing listings to release later is to enter the information in a regular post and then click the option Save For Later at the top and/or bottom of the page. These listings will be saved in Drafts and you can just complete them later.
